The Haunted Navy Base
I was in the NAVY and in June of 2000 I was stationed to The Naval Training Center in Great Lakes IL. At this time I was living in the 633 building for the Electronics Core School. I had to get up in the middle of the night to perform my watch duty, so it was about 3:30 in the morning when I woke up. Everyone on my floor of the barracks shared a community head (bathroom) in the middle of a long main hallway, which had doors to rooms running down both sides of it and great big windows all the way at the far end on the right side of the hall opposite the end of the building from my room.

Anyway I got up and went to the restroom to get washed up and dressed to go on duty, while I was in the restroom I got creeped out like something was watching me. I tried to just blow it off, because I don't get scared like that ever. When I was all done in the bathroom I went back down to my room to finish getting ready and when walked into my room I wanted to lock the door behind me for some reason. It was an auto lock door, so I would usually leave something in the way so the mechanism couldn't catch, this night I still did, but I didn't want to, I wanted to lock my door. I just said to myself " Your being silly, what the hell has gotten into me tonight?" I really thought, I was just having an off night.

Then I walked out of my room to go down the stairs to the watch station at the entrance of the building and before I could shut my bedroom door behind me, I saw it. All the way at the other end of the hall there was a girl, just standing there, with her back against the wall on the far left side off the corridor. She a white girl, with short light brown hair and she was wearing all black. She was very very thin, and I noticed that her legs looked just too thin, really strangely thin.

For some reason, I had the urge to walk closer to her, mind you at this point I just thought she was another person. As I walked closer to her, I was still pretty far away, but I cautiously moved towards her, I don't know why cautiously, I just felt strange, as if something just was not right. I took a couple more steps a wham she just walked forward and into the wall in front of her, the wall to my left that she had been facing the whole time. I thought to my self, what the hell was that, where did she go? I thought maybe, trying to be a rational person, it was just a girl from the barracks and she had somehow rigged her door so she could walk right in, like I always did. When I walked further down though I saw that the part of the wall she disappeared into was all windows! Just those huge windows at the end of the hall.
I took off and went down stairs as fast as I could. I still had a few minutes till I had to go on watch so I went out to have a smoke on the "smoke deck" There was a whole bunch of other women out there that lived in my building, many of which I was friends with so I told them all the story. They all knew me as pretty straight shooter and I never told anyone crazy stories, so I think most of them believed me. Well by the end we were all laughing and we nicknamed the ghost "Skinny Legs. Skinny Legs the ghost". When I went inside to go on watch I was laughing, but part of me was still pretty freaked out, especially the next time I went to sleep in my room.

I never saw her again, but the story stuck, for a long while I would here people telling other people about "Skinny Legs". The Navy is actually a pretty small world, I would not be surprised if the story ended up on other bases or even the ships. Not that it was some big deal or anything, not like most ghost stories you hear, but it was pretty weird.

After the story got out and people were talking about it we all kind of realized, that it may have been a victim of suicide. There are alot of stories of people killing themselves on Military bases. Out of shame for not being able to perform up to par, or constantly being belittled if you don't fit in. You hear about it alot. Who knows what it was, but thats my Ghost Story.

Ghost of a Cavalier, and a White Lady at Avebury Manor.
II saw and was followed by the Cavalier Ghost in the summer of 1984 when I was visiting Avebury Manor, and saw the White Lady coming down a small staircase behind me later that day. As I was wandering the gardens later I saw the White Lady looking out a window above. I have seen and communicated with ghosts since I was four years old, perhaps even earlier than that, but I remember my first ghostly visit at age 4. However, no ghosts have been as polite and well behaved as the ghosts I have encountered when I was in England and Wales. The Cavalier was quite striking, and yes there was a smell of roses, but I thought that fragrance came from the Gardens below until I read your information on the haunting's at Avebury Manor. I was on a tour of the Manor and let the other folks go ahead of me, out of the corner of my eye I caught site of the Cavalier Ghost, near a window, perhaps even a window seat in an upstairs room overlooking the gardens [or at least gardens to a Yank like myself]. He wore his hair in dark luxurious curls, had on tall leather cavalier style riding boots, and was dressed very elegantly with yards of lace. I would have said his costume was red, but the colours were faded. I could hear his boots on the wooden floor; I knew he was a ghost, but a very nice one. He smiled at me, inclined his head, I inclined mine in greeting, and he followed behind me to the door leading from the room in a very gentlemanly manner. He again inclined his head as I was walking through the door, and disappeared. I got a great sense of fun from his presence, not at all a sense of threat or fear. When he disappeared my traveling companion came running through the room behind me, she asked me who the man was who had been in the room with me? An Actor, or perhaps better stated a reinactor? I told her no, he was a ghost. He was the first ghost I saw during my first visit to the UK. The White Lady was more insubstantial, but I remember her long dress trailing the stairs behind me. Until I came across your website I didn't know who they were supposed to be. I wish there was a painting of Sir John Stawell; I would love to see if he resemble the Gentleman I saw that day.

We later walked to the Red Lion in Avebury for lunch, and I did feel the presence of their Lady Ghost, she was very impatient, but left us alone when requested to do so. I felt very sorry for her, there was an unhappiness and restlessness about her. Later when my friend and I were staying near Stonehenge at an old Coaching Inn, and our room was in the very old section of the Inn. The beams and floors were like something out of the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Late that night we heard footsteps walking back and forth outside our door most of the night; it freaked my friend out no end. When we would open the door there would be no one there. In the end I just asked whomever to cease their wandering near our door, because I needed to be fresh to drive the next day. The footsteps stopped then, but my friend told me she dreamt of a Cavalier coming out of the wardrobe during the night and who sat at the foot of my bed until morning. Luckily I dreamt no such thing and slept quite well that night because I felt quite safe. She hardly slept because she was scared out of her wits. For the rest of our trip throughout England and Wales she would not sleep in a room with a standing wardrobe or linen press.

I returned to the Marlborough and Avebury area in 1990 with my husband, and I really wanted him to meet the Cavalier at Avebury Manor, but we only caught a glimpse of him from the gardens downstairs through a window. He would not manifest when we were in the room where I first met him, but we did see the White Lady shadowing us through the rooms of the Manor after she had seen us approach the house from her vantage point out of another upstairs window. This was my husband?s first experience with a ghost. We were staying at the Castle and Ball in Marlborough and I was developing a horrid case of pneumonia and coughing like mad. At one point I got up from dinner to run to our upstairs room for my cough medicine. It was very late; we were the last diners in the hotel that evening. On my way up the stairs, I heard for want of a better word a soft deep male voice in my right ear saying, "My Lady may I help you". and felt a gentle hand grasp my right elbow and another at the small of my back. I responded out of habit, "No Thank You, I just have to get to my room and get my medicine" and I felt the touch leave me. I thought for a moment there was someone there helping me up the stairs, but there was no living person within forty feet of my position. This was my first auditory and physical experience of a ghost. I was wondering if anyone else has had contact with the very gentle ghost of the Castle and Ball Hotel in Marlborough?

He marched straight through the wall.
It was between 2:30 & 3:30 in the morning. I was lying in my room watching TV and I decided to go into the kitchen for something to eat. In the middle of making my sandwich, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Turning around quickly, I saw a young man walking through my back door. Before I describe him, this happened approximately 1975-76. Like I said; he was about 16 or 17 years old, clean-shaven, brunette, with his hair tied back in a queue. A tri corn was pulled down on his head. He had on a blue greatcoat, white cross-belts, both his vest and his breeches were buff colored. He had white stockings and his shoes had brass buckles. The musket that he carried was a Kentucky Long Rifle. He had the musket on his shoulder as if he were on guard duty. When he came through the door, he marched straight through the wall. I knew he was a ghost because my cellar steps are directly opposite the back door and he didn't use them. I'd like to give you a little background on where I live. I live in a town called Colonia, New Jersey. It was originally called Houghtonville. My house is situated between two sites where part of Washington's army fought a couple of skirmishes with British forces. I saw him several times subsequent to that occasion, but it has been quite a few years since I saw him last.

Wolverhamnpton's City Bar Ghost
I regularly see ghosts, and generally speaking they don't bother me too much. For years I have just assumed that I am slightly bonkers, and ignored them. However, recently my son (ten) sensed the ghost that I saw sitting next to him - we were at the City Bar in Wolverhampton. I have often seen a man walking there, who quickly vanishes. He often sits behind the bar, or crosses the downstairs room. On this occasion he sat next to my son, before vanishing, and my son pulled a face and withdrew his hand from the right, saying he was cold, shaking his hand to get warmth back into it - I had just seen the spirit rest his hand on my son's hand.

This is one of the occasions where a second person has unwittingly corroborated something I have seen - so I suspect City Bar in Wolverhampton is haunted, at least downstairs. I haven't yet seen the phantom upstairs corroborated by anyone else, but I would be interested to hear from others.

Also, Waterstones of Wolverhampton is haunted - as far as I can tell by a child who likes to throw things. Anyone else seen anything?
As my son is still young, and I don't want his friends saying his mother is bonkers, I would like to stay anonymous. Thankyou!.

Ghosts at the Massonic Suites its in Aldridge
I work in a pub/club where we have private functions and strange things keep happening. One night when we where locking up to go home we shut all the curtains and just started to lock the door when the other girl with me said some of the curtains were still open so we had to go back in and shut them again. I know that I closed them all. Another time we heard footsteps and doors banging upstairs and there was only 2 of us in the building. We went upstairs checked every room and nobody was there to be seen. Also when I was cleaning the glasses behind the bar a chair over the other side of the room tipped over and nobody was by it.

Creepy goings on in Carmarthen
The house that I am in now is an old drovers inn and approx 400years old. Many a rattle and bang can be heard when there is nobody in the house except myself. When we moved in for months the whole house became alive at 2am, this was not alarming but the whole atmosphere was the house being ?awake?.

The atmosphere is never threatening, but something had to be done. It had gotten to the point that I couldn't even take a bath without the feeling of being watched. So I consulted a friend who suggested that I spoke openly and ask whoever not to wake up the household and so I did. Whoever or whatever has been very obliging since! Lights blow after being put in fresh. Radio's turn on full volume even though they have been switched off. Televisions re-tune themselves. Things go missing and then turn up a few weeks later in a completely different place.

In this house I have seen out of the corner of my eye an old gentleman dresses from I'd say 1960's in farming clothes and a small child with blonde hair. Unsure whether it was a boy or girl. The sounds of children playing can be heard coming in from the garden. When we are the only people with children for quite a distance. In the old cow shed I have to prop the door open whenever I enter, but only me because it always closes and the hook latch put over, I have tried many times from the outside to shut the door and make the latch fasten itself but never succeeded but this has occurred a few times resulting me being locked in an old cow shed! Not fun I can tell you. There is a tumulus in the garden that on particular nights can have a halo of mist when the rest of the fields are clear.

Note from The Horseman
Whilst relaxing on my chaise longues in Hell, I popped the video on and I'm not sure I am convinced by this grainy footage. This could be someone running with a sheet over their head. However if someone would like to contact us to examine the video it would be very interesting to know an experts opinion on it. What do you think readers - is this really a ghost, or a fake?

Ghost Court on Film!
I Live in a flat on a council estate and strange things keep happening like noises and things keep getting chucked at us. One night we were in bed and a bag at the back of the wardrobe flew off and landed on the bed, on another night I was in the kitchen and I saw someone sitting on the settee but when I went in there was no one there (and my boyfriend was in the bedroom).

The following night I was in the bath and my boyfriend was watching tv in living room, when he saw something out the corner of his eye. So he sat there with his camera phone for a while and filmed towards the kitchen all of a sudden he captured what looks like a figure of a tall man walking towards the door, and we have still got the evidence on our phone. (see above to view the footage filmed).

A Bright Ultraviolet Ball of Light
A few years ago I was staying with a friend whose parents were building a new house for their summer holidays near the Atlantic coast of France (a place called Royan). In the back of the garden there was, I kid you not, an old tombstone. I questioned, within myself, whether it was a good idea to build on an old burial ground. The answer to my question soon came. Her parents left the house to go shopping in the middle of that summer's day, and took the precaution of locking the doors behind them. We were to stay in the house and wait for their return. Not long after they had gone we both very clearly heard footsteps coming up the wooden stairs towards the corridor leading to the main bedrooms. My friend was petrified, and I was pretty worried too as we thought there was an intruder. I made for the bedroom door to look at who was there - trying to reassure my friend and say maybe her parents had forgotten something; she was beside herself and asked me not to open the door; however I thought it best to see what it was and looked out into the corridor: all I remember is a bright ultraviolet ball of light floating towards me, coming from the top of stairs. I slammed the door shut - rather shocked! I never told my friend, because I wasn't sure if I believed my own eyes. We waited for their return and locked ourselves in her bedroom. It didn't come to haunt us any further on that occasion. I never went back there.

1880s Frontier Ghost
I enjoy your site, and yes I've seen a ghost. He lives in my house outside of Lewistown, Montana, USA.

My husband and I have lived here for 10 years and shortly after our arrival we became aware of knocking in the walls, and lights turning on by themselves. Soon, we noticed the figure of a man walking down the hall or standing out in the field. Now he's taken to moving furniture around.

My feeling is that his name is William and that he's associated with an 1880s frontier town called Cottonwood that was located a mile or so from our home. The other evening, I entered the kitchen and caught a quick glimpse of a young man with brown hair, wearing a checked shirt, who vanished in the proverbial "blink of an eye."

Woman in the window
I was with a friend walking in Edinburgh city centre at about 7pm one winter about 6 years ago. As we walked past an old building we both saw in the window a figure of an old woman. Edinburgh is full of old stone town houses with long windows just above street level. The woman in the window appeared to be standing on the window sill, directly behind the glass which was odd. She was very rigid and and upright with her hands at her sides. She was completely motionless except for her eyes which where darting about all over the place. This appeared immediately very strange , and added to the strangeness was the fact the building was dark and the room she was in was pitch black with no lights. She was a woman of advanced years (at least in her 70's) and standing in a room on a window sill in the dark! Her eyes darting around was quite alarming and she seemed to be almost white. I can't explain what I mean but similar to a glow in the dark effect but quite subtle.

Ghost Farmer caring for his sick wife even after her death
My Great Grandmother always thought she had a gift for seeing spirits. I remember her telling me a story about one in particular incident that stuck in my mind. Not long after she got married, my Great Grandmother and her new husband moved into a old farm house. Every night they would wake up to find an old man at the end of their bed looking over them. The apparition would then walk out of the room and down towards the cellar. My Grandmother was told that a couple used to live in the farm house. The farms wife was sick with cancer and every night the farmer would look in on his wife in bed before going down to the cellar to fetch a beer.

A Ghost Vicar
I went out to post a letter, came back and went thought the font door into a hall which had a galleried landing. I caught a quick glimpse of a Vicar walking across in his cassock. I didn't think any more about it and then later mentioned to a member of staff that I thought the Vicar had gone out. The house keeper said 'he has', and I said 'but I have just seen him go across the landing', 'oh no that'll be George, he regularly appears, and has been a previous incumbent of the Vicarage, who had died here'.

A Great Grandmother Returns
I saw my dead great-grandmother standing over my grandmother, only two days after she died. It freaked me out but after watching her i knew she was there to watch over my grandmother, and to say her own goodbyes. She noticed me watching her and just stared, then after about a minute, she just left. I know that God is real and that he grants wishes. I believe that now after know that my great-grandmothers last wish was to see her baby girl just one more time. Not all ghost are scary.

Ghostly Footprints
Last year, my wife and I went to St. Augustine for a vacation. While we were in an old house, I heard someone on the stairs. I waited and no one came down. So I went to the bottom of the stairs and looked up. The stairs had been closed off, years ago. The stairs just went up to a closed ceiling but yet I could hear someone walking on the stairs and I could see a shoe imprint in the stair carpet , every time I heard the step. I never believed in ghost before but now ....???

Ghost Child at the Crooked House
On Christmas Day in 2003 we were having a family meal at a local pub called the Crooked House. The meal was fantastic and everything was jolly nice. There were about 10 other tables with other families enjoying the same meal. We were about half way through the meal when my brothers girlfriend (now wife) went to use the toilet.

On her return to the table she was still quite happy, she made a point of saying that the children there were in high spirits as she had heard one of them whilst in the cubicle, I think she said the little kid was either singing or laughing. To which we replied that "none of the children in the room had left the room" (there being only about 3 children eating with their parents). Her face suddenly dropped and she was saying "no no I definitely heard one in the ladies".

I then frequented the ladies myself listening out for anything (not sure if I wanted to hear something or not). I came out of the toilets relieved but a little disappointed that I had not heard anything myself. I have to admit I was a little scared about being in there on my own but also quite curious as I have never actually seen or heard a ghost. We carried on talking about it and we started to tease her, not giving it any real credibility.

Well a few weeks later we went back to the pub and found a leaflet regarding how it is supposed to be haunted, to our astonishment it read that it was supposed to be haunted by a little girl that hangs around the toilet section of the pub!!
