Tower
of London - The most haunted
place in England
London's famous Tower, has a notorious and
bloody past. Constructed in 1078 by William the Conqueror it is quite
possibly the most haunted building in England.
The ghost of Thomas A. Beckett was the first reported haunting at
the Tower. The Inner Curtain Wall was constructed in the 13th century
and at the time Thomas's ghost appeared unhappy at the construction.
His ghost is said to have reduced the wall to rubble with one blow
of his cross.
The
Bloody Tower - Murdered Princes
The gruesome fortress is home to the spirits of the two famous young
boys murdered by their Uncle Duke of Gloucester (Richard III). The
ghosts of the two boys have been seen whimpering and clutching each
other in white gowns in the rooms they once occupied in life.
The
White Tower - White Lady
The oldest and most sinister of the towers is the White Tower. It
is haunted by the 'white lady' who has been seen at the window of
the tower waving to children in the opposite building. A Guard making
his rounds at the tower alone in a room, suddenly heard a voice behind
him whisper "There’s only you and I here”, upon turning
to seek the owner of the voice the guard found that he was still alone
in the room.
The
Wakefield Tower - Sectre of
Henry VI
The Wakefield Tower is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of Henry
VI, who was murdered in the tower in 1471 by the Duke of Gloucester
(later to become Richard III). It is said that on the anniversary
of his death his grim figure appears then fades back into the stone.
Tower
Green -
The Screaming Phantom Countess
The execution site for many souls who lost their heads at the Tower
is the Tower Green. Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey are rumoured to
haunt this spot. Anne is said to lead a ghostly procession of Lords
and Ladies down the aisle of the Chapel Royal of St. Peter and Vincula.
Her Headless apparition has also been seen walking the corridors of
the Tower.
The ghost of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury returns to the spot
of her execution in horrifying style. Her screaming phantom is seen
being chased around the block by a ghostly executioner.
