Headless
ghost of St Osyths Priory
The Priory dates from the 12th century -
it's namesake was an East Anglian Queen, who was beheaded by Danish
invaders, in nearby “Nuns Wood”. Legend has it, that
when St Osyths refused to renounce her faith she was executed, and
once her head was chopped off her executioners were horrified to
see her pick up her own head and walk to the church. Her ghost can
be seen on the anniversary of her beheading repeating this walk
holding her severed head.
Ghostly
Nuns of Usk Priory
In 1970 a woman visiting Monmouthshire's
Usk Priory, one winter saw five ghostly nuns walking from the far
end of the house, by the library, towards the church. The original
convent at Usk was for five nuns of the Benedictine order. At the
suppression of the monasteries the five nuns were pensioned off,
having given their allegiance to the king, thereby saving their
lives and the probable destruction of the priory.
Talacre
Abbey haunting's
In 1997 a group of a paranormal investigations heard unearthly voices
coming from outside the chapel, and dark shadows were seen going
past one of the doors of the chapel. Five minutes after the group
had experienced these strange happenings, the chapel door began
to swing backwards and forwards by itself and candles then began
to go out one by one.
The
Black Lady of Tamworth Castle
A 9th century ghost of a nun called Editha is said to haunt Tamworth
Castle. Robert de Marmion had expelled the nuns from a local convent
and the resulting angry prayers of these nuns are said to have summoned
Editha from her grave. In 1139 Marmion was attacked by the ghost
of Editha, who prophesied that unless the nuns were restored to
Polesworth, the Baron would meet an untimely death.
Abbey
House haunting - Cambridge
The ghost of a nun haunts this sixteenth century house in Cambridge.
Abbey House was built on the site of Barnwell Priory, which was
established in 1112. Phenomena such as loud banging on bedroom doors,
footsteps on the staircase and an apparition rattling chains around
the room have been reported. Also seen in the house is a ghostly
nun who appears 3 or 4 times a month in the spring. Walking into
bedrooms and standing at the end of beds then disappearing into
the curtains.
Nun's
Corner - Grimsby
Robin Furman was met by the presence of a ghost nun at his old house
in Grimsby, known locally as Nun's Corner.
"I reached the top of the stairs and there she was: a tall
nun. I could see her quite clearly and she looked completely real.
It was only when I saw her face that I realized she wasn't real
... because she hadn't got one. In its place was a glowing light.
I was absolutely amazed, of course. She was wearing an old-fashioned
head-dress, whereas modern nuns have flat head-dresses. Then she
drifted away and was gone. It all happened so quickly that I didn't
have time to be scared."
Langston
Priory
in the 1960's a ghost used to appear frequently in the form of a
white shape and looking very much like a nun in head-dress. Room
1 was the main area of activity for this enterty, which would politely
cough to announce its presence, then proceed to shuffle its feet.
