| Beaulieu
Abbey's Ghostly Cistercian Monks
Cistercian Monks arrived at Beaulieu Abbey from France in 1204.
Quite a few different sightings in recent years of ghostly monks
are evidence that many of monks have refused to leave Beaulieu even
after death. Lord Montagu inherited the Abbey in 1951 has said
"There is nothing sinister about it, they are just here.
Most people living in the area accept it without question and don't
appear to find it in the least bit unusual.'
Mrs Elizabeth Varley recalls hearing the monks back in her teenage
years. "I was sitting by the window of my room quite late
at night when I heard it. It was very clear and quite loud enough
for me to pick up the notes of the chant. I thought perhaps it was
the gipsies living in the forest, but when I sang the tune the next
day to someone staying in the house the recognised it as a Gregorian
chant."
Ghostly Lay brothers have been sighted in their former dormitory
(Dormas). People have reported seeing brown-clad figures that look
completely real.

This Augustinian Priory is haunted by an Augustinian Canon. The
ghostly Canon was seen in 1912 by a prominent member of the aristocracy.
The Marquis of Hartington saw a figure in the room he was staying
in, standing by the door. It was described as a figure of a man
in his sixties, with a round face and stubble. The figure wore a
long robe and hood and this description was similar to that of a
figure seen by the Rector.
A
Diminutive monk haunts Tower Grange
The spectre of a small diminutive monk haunts Tower Grange (Formby).
A skeleton (dressed in a black habbit) was unearthed in a priests
hole, which is thought to be the remains of the ghost. The Grange
was built on the grounds of Whalley Abbey, and it is thought that
the ghost is that of a monk, who chose to die of hunger and thirst
rather than betray the people who sheltered him. |

Ghostly
Monk Procession - Bilsington
The remains of a 13th century Priory, are
haunted by Augustinian Monks who once worshipped at the Priory.
70 years ago Mr and Mrs Joseph Conrad were out for a drive in their
pony and trap one autumn evening. On there trip the pony cast a
shoe and upon stopping near the site of Bilsington Priory Mrs Conrad
had first hand experience of the Monstatic apparition:
"Suddenly I heard a terrified whimper
from the dog. As I gazed at the opposite wall, which seemed to dissolve
before my eyes, the room was filled with a choking dust and gritty
fog, and through the haze I saw a long procession of habited monks.
Slowly they passed along a hidden flight of steps, their wooden
patterns sounding in ghostly rhythm as they climbed."
