Pumpkins come in various sizes, however medium sized ones will
be most appropriate for the majority of carvings. Larger Pumpkins
can also be used for more complex designer and also small ones
for simplistic stenciling.
A sharp knife and also a small saw (obviously a clean one) to
remove the top of the pumpkin. Patterns and stencils can be
available online for you to down load. Failing that you can
create your own designs before you start to carve. A large spoon
is also very handy for removing the pulp. A candle and candle
holder is also necessary to have - to make your Jack O' Lantern
glow.
The traditional way to carve a pumpkin is to do it freehand.
Firstly place your pumpkin on some old newspaper so not to make
too much mess. With a large knife cut the top of the pumpkin
below its stem and remove. Using a large spoon dig out the pulp
inside (you can use this to make pumpkin pie) also remove the
seeds. Once the inside is removed you can then start to calve
the face or design into your pumpkin from the outside. Finally
place a candle inside the pumpkin to create that warm glow and
bring your Jack O' Lantern to life.
They can last anything from only one day to over a week depending
on temperature and freshness.
